I wish to replace damaged wheels on an old road bike which has 27" x 11/4" wheels, but when I look for replacements I am faced with a confusing array of what seems to be modern metric sizes, none of which look to be directly equivalent. Please

The short answer is . . . None!

Unless you can find wheels of this size you are stuck.

A conversion to 700c wheels is costly, -best treat yourself to a new bike.
