Can I avoid toe overlapping on bicycles by changing the crankset size?

Jul 29, 2010 by Richy | Posted in Cycling

I know I can be more cautious when making sharp turns at slow speeds but is this another way to avoid toe overlap. What are the complications to changing the crankset size as well. And also, are there other ways to avoid toe overlap.

More information needed here about what sort of bike you have and what type of shoe/pedal/crankset setup you have. A shorter crank will help a bit, but cranks only vary by a few mm in length, if overlap is severe, you may not solve your problem this way.

What crankset and bottom bracket do i need?

Feb 07, 6584 by Jack C | Posted in Cycling

I have bought a giant trance XC 2 '08 frame and need to know what type of bottom bracket and chainset i need. A few good suggestions would be great.

get an XT hollowtech crank to go on this bike. 104x68mm anything but the XT is hollow with outer bearings and will work fine. The BB shell on this bike is suitable for nearly anything mountain in Shimano, Race Face or Sram/rockshox.

What is a good roadbike crankset that won't bust my wallet?

May 08, 2008 by slowbuthappy | Posted in Cycling

I'm looking for a crankset for my bike. I'd like something that doesn't weigh a billion pounds and will take 9/16th pedals.

I don't race, I just commute up a lot of hills ~40 miles/day and I'm a short, non-muscular person.

okay.. you go up hill so I immediately suggest a triple crankset or a crankset that has 3 rings. Most cranksets for roadbikes today use a 9/16 pedal insert so that should be easy. Now, a good crankset... well... depends on how much you want to spend.

How do I find out the crankset size?

Sep 26, 2009 by riderbluegreen | Posted in Cycling

How do I find out if I need a 165mm, 170mm, or 175mm crankset to replace the current crankset on my mountain bike? It is a 12 speed Savoy by Royce Union. Thanks

It will be printed on the back on the arm. Most road bikes use 170 mm and mountain bikes will use 175 mm. You will find 165 mm arms on the smaller frame bikes.

SRAM S975 Quarq crankset review

25.05.11

The SRAM S975 Quarq crankset is a crank-based power meter and is an ideal training and racing aid. It’s easily transferable from your training to your racing bike, which means you ca n m easure power with one device in any situation.

The Quarq system consists of a series of strain gauges placed on the crank spider and a magnet attached to the chainstay. This enables torque and angular velocity measurement, which can be converted into power.

The data is sent wirelessly via Ant+ to a head unit capable of picking up a signal, such as a Garmin. Quarq doesn’t make its own head units, so these have to be bought separately.

We tested the SRAM Quarq crankset with a Garmin 705 and, for comparison (on the same bike), a Powertap SL+ with Joule 2.0. First time out we noticed a 10W drift between the two meters over the course of the ride – they read the same at the start but were 10W apart by the end.

By the second ride this had stabilised and we saw a consistent 5-8W difference between the two. This is to be expected as the Quarq measures power at the crank whereas the Powertap measures at the hub and will be lower because of drivetrain losses.

Rotor 3D crankset questions.......... -

by SDVOL

I have regular cranks on my TT bike, crit bike, and rain bike. I have bio-pace on my ice bike, and now rotor q-rings on my road bike. I liked the bio-pace and really like the q-rings. To me, they feel like your stroke is smoother. I only did one ride with a polar power meter on my rode bike and it showed the pedal index (a measure of pedal stoke "quality") was in fact a touch better but I wouldn't call the data conclusive or statistically significant. I don't have problems with knee pain normally so I ride them for the noticeably smoother stroke they offer.

I replaced my sram red compact with rotor 3d with a quarq powermeter built in.

In subjective terms, the cranks feel stiffer than red, and more direct, and like they spin more easily.

Looks are imho much better than red, and as a side-benefit I look like a true ctt fanboy now!

I used the red rings - I've spent 25 years with my legs going round, so the change in timing isn't interesting for me.
