What makes Shimano Ultegra Crankset or Cassettes better over 105, in Road Bike?

Jul 09, 2009 by Friend | Posted in Cycling

I have 105 Shimano Crankset in my Road bike. What makes Ultegra better over 105? Just 100g lighter and looks better? Does it really improves the performance and how? I need to know the effectiveness before I upgrade.

I have 52/39T front

The primary difference is the weight and its probable a really dedicated rider could tell the difference in the speed of the shifts. For most of us however, the differences would probably go largely unnoticed.
As far as actual performance goes,

Anyone using the new style shimano crankset with outboard bearings?

Aug 16, 2007 by Rusty Sanchez | Posted in Cycling

I just ordered a new bike, and will be using the new style shimano crank/BB. I was wondering if anyone here has used this style crank, and what they thought of it. I sure hope it's better than ISIS. I had to go back to square taper on my fixed gear because

I have used all the systems and like the outboard bearing design. They are easy to fit and remove, including the bottom bracket and I'd say require less tools than a square taper and also faster to get on and off. Wear is as good as square taper and better

Can I put a Shimano 105 crankset on a montain bike?

Feb 07, 2742 by SteveS | Posted in Cycling

I have an old mountain bike (Shogun Trail breaker circa 1996) that has a bent big cog. I want to use it as a run about bike for running up the shops etc. Can I use a Shimano 105 crank set? What do I need to watch out for when setting it up?

No problems with doing that just check front derailleur clearance and also your chain length. Depending on what size your crank set was if it was a mountain bike you may need to add a few links to your chain to account for the larger chain-ring.

How is the shimano alivio crankset? I'm making a decision between the acera and alivio crank arms?

Mar 26, 2009 by MTB Rider | Posted in Cycling

Which is stronger, lighter, better

Let's forget about stronger and lighter at this point since both Acera and Alivio are pretty much entry-level stuff. They both do their job well without the pretense of these issues.

The biggest difference, as far as I can remember, between

What tool do I need to remove a Shimano Ultegra crankset?

Apr 23, 2008 by Blurp | Posted in Cycling

If you could give me a specific Park Tool #, it would be great!

Thanks!

CCP-4 or a CWP-6 should do it for you.

Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood: Amgen Tour's Baldy stage is harder than hard

07.02.20

Ten days after riding the May 7 L’Etape du California — the organized, mass-participation ride covering the stage 7 route of this year’s Amgen Tour of California — I’m still trying to wrap my head around the difficulty of the final 5km climb to the Mount Baldy Ski Area, where the stage finishes.

To call it hard would be an understatement. Let’s just say it’s harder than hard.

Trying to put into perspective how nuts the final climb really was, I recalled a bad haircut I’d had during my post-undergrad days in Santa Cruz, California, living in a house full of surfers, cyclists and triathletes. To avoid spending $15 a month at a hair salon we often gave each other haircuts with a communal set of electric clippers. One fateful haircut was near completion when I took off the blade’s guard, and asked a housemate to “clean up my neckline.” He misunderstood and dragged the clippers up my neckline, rather than down, scorching a two-inch bald spot straight up the back of my head.

Ask Nick: What's in Nick's toolbox? Last August I purchased a Cervélo S2 with SRAM Red shifters, Red front/rear derailleur and Rotor 3D round crankset. The rear shifting of the bike is flawless but the front shifting, going from the little to the big ring, is very inconsistent;
