Another cyclist hurt in hit-and-run on Shore Drive

Monika Glandorff knows Shore Drive can be a dangerous place for cyclists.
So as she has done many other weekends, the 33-year-old Navy lieutenant rose early Saturday in the hopes of completing her ride before many cars would hit the road. She strapped on her helmet and blinking LED lights, grabbed her cellphone and started toward the Oceanfront.
It was nearing dawn as she made her way down the tree-lined stretch of Shore Drive bordering Fort Story when something slammed into her back, sending her flying over her handlebars. She landed on the side of the road and looked up to see taillights fading into the distance.
The car didn't even slow down, she said.
Glandorff - the second cyclist in just over a month to be seriously hurt in a hit-and-run on Shore Drive - is now hospitalized at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center with two fractured vertebrae and a broken leg. Both cases remain unsolved.
Now local cyclists are renewing their calls for the city to make Shore Drive safer for them.
