You Ask They Answer

On road bicycle tires, what is the difference between folding beads and wire beads?

Oct 26, 2007 by The Maestro | Posted in Cycling

What are the pros and cons to each? What are the reasons for having one or the other? Which would you recommend?

The lightest clincher tires have a folding - usually Kevlar - bead. Many manufacturers make otherwise identical tires with a choice of a wire or Kevlar bead. The tire with the wire bead is always a little heavier and less expensive.

Are thin bicycle road tires suitable for the city?

Aug 09, 2008 by spupy | Posted in Cycling

I just bought a second-hand road bicycle to commute around town. It has a lightweight frame, mudguards, luggage carrier, normal handlebars (not drop handlebars), and I guess it is not a racing bike. But the tires are very thin.
The Question is:

Hello!!
I used to ride in town with a mountain bike fitted with 26' slick (thin tires) and not only they were uncomfortable but they turned out to be dangerous in crossing tramway rails. You must cross them at 90°, otherwise, this is risky...

On a Trek 2.3 road bicycle, what wheel set and road tires would significantly improve riding performance?

May 05, 2010 by "Ferla" | Posted in Cycling

Currently have Bontrager Race wheel set and Bontrager hardcase tires. I must have higher performance to race with an "A" riding group in Orlando, Florida.

I rode a Trek 2.3 last year before I upgraded to a Madone, but anyway, when I got into racing, and got a little better of course, I upgraded my wheelset to a pair of Bontrager X Lites, and put on Continental 4000s tires. They seemed to improve my cornering

Road bicycle flats? How to prevent them?

Jun 05, 2009 by NeroN | Posted in Cycling

I have a problem with bicycle flats. Almost every 200 km i get a flat (I changed 6 tubes already). Ive got a road bicycle with tires Michelin Orium 622x23 and i inflate them to 7.5 bar.
(8 is max). There is pretty much glass on road and that is

I ride about 160km a week and flats are just a part of cycling. Besides ensuring your tires are good quality and fairly new, the best way I've found is to pay attention to the road surface. There is so much debris - glass, nails, thorns etc. One time

Does the tread on road bicycle (slick) tyres actually have a function or is it purely cosmetic?

Sep 21, 2007 by doberweiler | Posted in Cycling

I would just like to know if it has any function as I have heard that bikes can have completely smooth tyres in the wet any, answers much appreciated. Also if people in professional bike racing believe this to be true.

jman4117 is correct

The tyre compound is more important than the tread, I use
Vredestein fortezza tricomp they are the best slicks I have tried in the wet so far. (even though I avoid riding my best bike in the rain)

Cal road warriors: Fried artichokes, a flat tire, high spirits

07.02.76

While I was stranded on the side of the road fixing my tire — trying to hold up my bike as 18 wheelers and large trucks blew large gusts of wind in my direction — nearly every single AIDS Lifecycle rider who passed slowed down and asked if I needed any help.

This spirit of support has been strong, among riders as well as from the communities we encounter. As we pass through towns, residents come out on the streets — ringing cowbells, waving, thanking us or even holding up signs commemorating friends or family who have died of AIDS.

Along with the large amounts of money this ride has raised, riding through California in itself has the potential to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. I’m looking forward to the LifeCycle’s remaining days and I’m glad to be participating in this year’s ride.

Joanne Yeung, ’08 alum

Today’s long day started with a painfully early start: by 4:45 a.m., it was rise and shine for most riders, to avoid Santa Cruz rush-hour traffic. Day 2 for me started strong, with the help of several famous AIDS LifeCycle rest stops to look forward to. You know it’s Day 2 when you’re looking forward to free coffee and smoothies from the locals in town!

Review by T. Lewis (USA) 2009-11-18
I bought the sports (Select Series) and have recently put about 120 miles on it so far. If there was something wrong or cheap about it, I probably would have found out now. I decided on a size large frame (I'm 6 ') and it is right. The only assembly required was on the front wheel, seat, reflectors, handlebars, a bit 'OT...   Read More Top #1 Best Discount Road Bikes 2010 reviews Review by knowbs (USA) 2010-07-11
This bike is worth the money. Very easy to asssemble, looks good, pretty small. Mine was not a problem, but there was an intermittent popping noise from the crank. I called the 800 number from a sticker located on the stand and spoke with a woman very helpful customer service, sent me his ass across the bottom of the bracket...   Read More Top #2 Best Discount Road Bikes 2010 reviews Review by Jus1Dread (Aberdeen, SD) 2007-05-11...
