How do you measure fork diameter on a road bike?

Feb 07, 3859 by Merry_Christmas_eve | Posted in Cycling

I want to buy a new fork for my road bike and i want to know how to measure the diameter. If its too big it wont fit, right?

Pull the handlebar stem off the current fork steerer tube by loosening the stem clamp bolts. Then just measure the diameter of the OUTSIDE steerer tube using a dial caliper if you have one (or a good ruler if you don't). I fyou have an older "quill-style"

How can I tell whether a bike fork is set up to take recessed allen nuts?

Jul 26, 2007 by Whatevs | Posted in Cycling

I recently had the fork on a vintage road bike switched out because it was damaged; the replacement was just a plain chrome steel road fork. I'm looking to mount a set of Tektro long-reach caliper brakes but they only come with recessed mounting bolts.

if it's drilled the top of the fork will have two tube thingy sticking out

Can a threaded road bike fork of 1 inch (190mm steerer 60mm of thread )be cut to a 140mm and re-threaded.?

Dec 23, 2007 by o | Posted in Cycling

I may be able to get away without re-theading the forks, what tools would i need?

Maybe Hammish has something there. I never was aware of steerer tubes being butted, but maybe some are?

It's easy enough to check it. Bring it into a bike shop if you already have it cut down they have the threading dies for forks and

Tour the Pioneers by bicycle

Ride will explore the Little Wood River landscape

By JASON KAUFFMAN
Express Staff Writer

Itching to get out and bicycle through some of the most scenic landscapes Blaine County has to offer? If so, plan to head over to Carey on Saturday, June 11, for a ride through rural lands surrounding the Little Wood River, which sees far fewer visitors than its more developed cousin to the west.

The Idaho Conservation League and Wood River Land Trust are hosting the bike tour through the southern foothills of the Pioneer Mountains. Riders will have two different rides of varying length to choose from. These are unsupported, free-admission rides.

The all-dirt rides will begin in Carey at the 93 Express Café on Main Street. Participants are asked to meet at the Carey fairgrounds by 9 a.m.

The longer of the two rides is a 38-mile loop that will begin by heading up Road Canyon northeast of Carey. From there, riders will descend along the South Fork of Muldoon Creek, with expansive views north into the higher peaks of the Pioneer Mountains. Finally, the ride will connect with the Little Wood River, passing the Little Wood River Reservoir before finally arriving back in Carey.

The Stew: Fork and the Road: A tasty bike tour

by The Stew staff

Any activity is better when it's combined with good food, right?

To that end, I spent Saturday afternoon pedaling for my lunch on a "tour of Asia" organized by Chicago's Fork and the Road ( forkandtheroad.com ) guides. Three restaurants and 12 easy miles on my bike made for a delightful afternoon of eating, riding and chatting up new acquaintances with a shared interest in fitness and food.

Food tours are nothing new – and if you have a favorite, tell us about it below – but the biking twist makes this one worth a few weekend hours. Fork and the Road was started just over a year ago by Dimitra Tasiouras and Sharon Bautista, two Chicagoans who met while posting on lthforum.com . In the summer of 2008, they led a group of friends on an informal bike tour of favorite gelato shops in the city. It was such a hit, they saw a business in the making and made it happen.

Through the summers (they'll wrap up in the end of September this year), they lead food tours via bicycle every weekend, sometimes twice a weekend.
